Committed wins stirs religious discussion

Apparently there is some discussion in the Seventh Day Adventist community of concern that Committed's win will be a misrepresentation of their faith. Committed, as their name implies, are observant and have notified producers that they are unable to perform or rehearse on Saturdays.

With comments on the show such as "birth control music" from Ben Folds to Shawn Stockman who said, "I seen some movements that uh I see y'all church boys I see you," many Adventists are wondering whether the right message was relayed to a national audience. Says one "After this performance, will non-Christians now view Adventists as hypocrites or a farce? "

Oh boy. Both Naturally Seven and Take 6 have remained very firm in their faith and I don't see how Committed will be any different. Silly fundies.

Committed now has both a Facebook page and Twitter account.

I was a non-Christian for 44 years. Believe me, non-Christians pay little attention to religious discussions. . . . Anyway, the judges teased Committed, and Committed lampooned pop culture. That's all. The guys in Committed harbor no ill intent (hence their below-standard performance with "Every Breath You Take"). If we all have to be perfect, before we can testify to our faith, we're in a lot bigger trouble than that wrought by a couple of dance moves.

I happen to sing with Undivided, also an cappella sextet whose majority of members are Seventh-day Adventists. We also have gotten a bit of controversy within the church because of our lively latin rhythms/music, also for our dance moves. The church simply believes syncopated music shouldn't be use for worship and therefore dancing for pleasure is not welcomed, especially the latin or hispanic SDA community around latin america (which is a lot more conservative). In other words, We (Undivided) as a group have had a lot of issues with our sacred repertoire and our dance moves (choreography) during our concerts within the church, but they still invite us to perform. luckily for us, this is an old tradition that younger members of the SDA are simple not observing anymore.

We just decided to carry on with our music career and encourage Committed to do the same. Take 6 and Naturally 7 have done so and have been successful.

It is interesting though that both NoTa (Sing-Off winners from last year) and Committed are both Seventh-day Adventist groups and had to dance their way as well as sing their way into first place.

The SDA church should just be proud of their talented members and congratulate them for showcasing their talent on national TV.

Peace
