Sing-Off Kicks Off

A very entertaining opening show for season three of the Sing-Off and I think everybody did a great job. I like new judge Sara Bareilles and enjoyed her light-hearted yet astute comments. Good to see some familiar faces including one of the most ubiquitous people in contemporary a cappella Richard Steighner (Urban Method), the only person to compete in two different groups on the same night in the Harmony Sweeps National Finals (and win). If you missed the show you can watch it for free on Hulu.

I feared the sound was going to be too chorale and too female dominated. Can't help it -- I prefer 4 to 6 voices with traditional bass, baritone, 1st and 2nd tenor harmonies. But I was pleasantly surprised by the sound. I agreed with the judges on both groups eliminated.

I didn't expect to enjoy the 'rapapella', since I can't stomach rap music. But if I had to pick a winner after one night, it might well have been Urban Method! At least in this performance, I found them more 'operapella' than 'rapapella'. Very dramatic and melodic story telling.

Looking forward to hearing the other 8.
